Undergraduate training introduced psychiatry as a fascinating field dealing with the intersection of neurobiology, psychology, and human behaviour. During internship, it became evident that psychiatry extends beyond symptom management and can bring about meaningful and lasting changes in a person’s life, which further strengthened the decision to pursue the field. Psychiatry is viewed both as a science and a craft—one that combines clinical understanding with a compassionate, individualised approach while recognising the uniqueness of each person’s experiences. The biopsychosocial model is especially valued for its holistic framework, allowing care to address not only mental health symptoms, but also emotional, social, and occupational well-being. The opportunity to support individuals through recovery and help restore a sense of balance, functioning, and purpose continues to make the field deeply fulfilling.
