Why did you choose to become a psychiatrist?

Psychiatry is a field that highlights the profound influence mental health has on an individual’s overall well-being and quality of life. Emotional well-being often plays an important role in how individuals cope with physical illnesses, daily stressors, and life challenges. The field is particularly meaningful because many individuals experience psychological distress silently, often due to stigma or fear of being misunderstood. Mental health concerns not only affect the individual, but also influence relationships, family dynamics, and overall functioning. Supporting one individual through emotional difficulties can therefore positively impact the wider family system. Beyond symptom reduction, psychiatry focuses on improving emotional well-being, resilience, interpersonal functioning, and helping individuals move toward more meaningful and fulfilling lives.
