Dr. Thomas Issac’s professional journey into psychiatry commenced during his medical training, where he witnessed the profound interconnectedness of the mind, brain, and body. Growing up in rural Kerala and pursuing his MBBS at M.O.S.C Medical College, he was captivated by the intricacies of human behaviour and cognition. However, it was during his tenure at NIMHANS, where he dedicated over 11 years to training in clinical neurosciences, psychiatry, and geriatric psychiatry, that his passion truly flourished. His PhD research on cognitive decline in patients with cerebral small vessel disease unveiled the metabolic and vascular contributions to neuropsychiatric disorders. Dr. Thomas Issac’s decision to pursue an MD in psychiatry and later a DM in Geriatric Psychiatry from NIMHANS Bangalore stems from his passion to seamlessly integrate clinical care with cutting-edge research. This field enables him to embody the role of a clinician-researcher, advocating for improved policies and early interventions, particularly in low- and middle-income settings such as India.
