Why did you choose to become a therapist?
My interest in the profession has been primarily nurtured by the education and training I have received and continue to receive. Through this process, I have actively come to terms with the unique capabilities and resilient nature each individual is equipped with and can constantly thrive in a supportive environment. I feel honoured to be a part of the trained professional community, enabling such an environment for people to work on themselves, and discover and rediscover their unique identities.
What would you like to tell a client who comes to you for therapy?
I would like to begin with congratulating my clients for taking the first step towards acknowledging their concerns and seeking support. It is a big and brave step! As a therapist, I will strive to provide my clients with a non-judgemental safe space, ensuring confidentiality to encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings openly. I would want them to know that being patient with themselves and also with the therapeutic process is essential to work on themselves.
What does a first session with you look like?
The initial session would be the foundation of the therapeutic process, it would be about getting to know the client, their concerns and their background. For the client to become comfortable with me and my approach. Apart from this, I prefer to discuss coping styles, safe boundaries, specific expectations and any other questions or clarifications the client requires.
What has been an important learning of being a therapist?
I have discovered that providing an empathetic, supportive and accepting environment to any individual can have a tremendous impact on their growth! By using this foundation, individuals can attempt to become the best version of themselves. In the words of Carl Rogers, "People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, ‘Soften the orange a bit on the right-hand corner.’ I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds."
Can you share a quote that resonates with you?
“To do the useful thing, to say the courageous thing, to contemplate the beautiful thing- that is enough for one man's life.” - T.S. Eliot
